Nine-year-old Carleisa Lewis lost her life on Friday morning after she was struck down by a car on Islington Public Road, East Bank Berbice. The driver of the car, Anthony Persaud of Glasgow Village, East Bank Berbice is currently in Police custody assisting with the investigation.
According to reports, Persaud was driving motorcar PJJ 2394 and was proceeding along the Islington Public Road. He alleged that the child ran across the road from east to west and into the path of the car.
As a result of the collision, she fell onto the road and received injuries to her body. She was picked up in an unconscious condition by her sister, and with the assistance of Persaud, she and taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Her body is presently at the New Amsterdam Hospital mortuary awaiting a post mortem examination. Meanwhile, a breathlyzer test conducted on Persaud revealed that he had no alcohol in his system. Police are continuing investigations.
