4 years in jail for man who chopped uncle over missing charger adapter

A 20-year-old construction worker who chopped his uncle over a missing charger adapter, was on Monday, sentenced to four years in prison for the crime.

Joshua Witter of Lot 11 Dr.Miller Street, Triumph, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was found guilty on a charge which alleged that he maliciously wounded his 36-year-old uncle, Darion Witter. He committed the offence on July 4, 2021.

The prosecutor stated that on July 3, 2021, at around 08:00 hrs, Darion Witter, a security guard, and his nephew had a misunderstanding over the charger adapter.

Joshua Witter accused his uncle of taking the item without his permission. During the argument, the construction worker threatened to chop his uncle.

At around 08:00 hrs the following day, Darion Witter was inside his home when his nephew approached him from behind and dealt him several chops with a cutlass.

According to the Prosecutor, Darion Witter received injuries to his right thumb and left foot. He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted.

Due to the severity of his injuries, Darion Witter’s right thumb was amputated. The matter was reported and following an investigation, his nephew was arrested and charged.

Joshua Witter was sentenced by Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool who presides at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Courts.
