36 months in jail for man who broke into private jet, stole $2.1M in items

A 36-month jail sentence was imposed on a 43-year-old man, who confessed to breaking into a private jet and stealing $2.1M in high-end liquor, electronic gadgets and other items.

The aircraft was parked at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

Alfred Rajaram, called “Bunny”, an unemployed man of Dakara Circuit Road, Timehri, committed the crime between October 26 and 28.

The items he carted off belonged to Courtney Curso and Jason Johnson.

The charge against him was laid under Section 164 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act Chapter 8:01.

Rajaram appeared at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrates’ Courts on Thursday and pleaded guilty to two charges for the offence of simple larceny.

Consequently, Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman sentenced him to 36 months in prison on each of the two counts.

The two sentences, will however, run concurrently.

Some of the stolen items were recovered at the man’s house.

It was reported that the private aircraft flew in officials from an international company for a meeting with local investors.

The break-in of the private jet has raised questions about the level of security at the country’s main international airport.
