High Court Judge Sandil Kissoon has sentenced two men to each serve over 10 years in prison for raping two underage girls.
In the first case, 21-year-old Mark Fontanelle of Kwakwani, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) was jailed for 11 years for raping a 12-year-old girl on November 7, 2021.
Upon his arraignment at the Demerara Sexual Offences Court, Fontanelle, an aspiring pilot, pleaded guilty to the offence of engaging in sexual penetration with a child under 16.
In the other case, Ray Williams, 33, a father of four and coal miner, was jailed for 15 years and three months for engaging in sexual penetration with a 12-year-old girl.
He first raped the child between February 26 and July 31, 2021, then again between August 1 and 31, 2021, and finally between September 1 and 30, 2021.
Like Fontanelle, he too pleaded guilty to the charges. Both Fontanelle and Williams were represented by defence counsel Teriq Mohammed.
State Counsel Cicelia Corbin, State Counsel Caressa Henry, and State Counsel Paneeta Persaud presented the prosecution’s case.
