18-month-old toddler drowns in bucket of water

An 18-month-old toddler of Potsville Kwakwani drowned yesterday in a bucket of water while she was left in the care of her sibling after her mom went to attend a funeral.

The child, who has been identified as Orinda August, drowned sometime between 17:00 to 18:00hrs yesterday.

Reports are that the toddler’s mom, Amanda Wills left her at home in the company of her 7-year-old brother and her 15-year-old sister and went to attend a funeral.

According to the police, the toddler and her sister were upstairs while her brother was downstairs playing. It was reported that he later went upstairs to check on his siblings, and upon checking, he saw his big sister sleeping.

The 7-year-old then made further checks and discovered August lying head down in a bucket of water.

He then pulled her out and raised an alarm, and the child was rushed to the Kwakwani Hospital Complex, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

No marks of violence were seen on the exposed part of the child’s body. Nevertheless, an investigation is ongoing.
