September 2021 is deadliest month for COVID-19 in Guyana; 167 people died

On Friday, October 1, 2021, the Health Ministry reported that six more persons who tested positive for COVID-19 died between September 29 and 30, 2021. This now takes the total number of deaths for September to 167- the most fatalities recorded in a single month since the start of the pandemic.

Guyana’s COVID-19 death toll has since climbed to 792. As of Friday, the Health Ministry reported that 228 new cases were recorded from 1, 277 tests. The total number of confirmed cases has risen to 32, 055- of which 16, 833 are females, and the remaining 15, 222 are males.

There are presently 30 patients in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 140 persons are in institutional isolation, nine persons are in institutional quarantine while 3651 persons are in home isolation. To date, Guyana has conducted 319, 070 COVID-19 tests. Importantly, there are 3651 active COVID-19 cases. To date, 27, 440  persons have recovered from the deadly virus.

The distributional of the total number of confirmed cases are as follows: Region One (1482), Region Two (1174), Region Three (4253), Region Four (15, 392), Region Five (1129), Region Six (2293), Region Seven (1618), Region Eight (500), Region Nine (2364) and Region 10 (1850).

Below is a breakdown of the COVID-19 deaths per month: 

March to July 2020 (20), August 2020 (24), September 2020 (38), October 2020 (44), November 2020 (25), December 2020 (13), January 2021 (13), February 2021 (20), March 2021 (36), April 2021 (66), May 2021 (99), June 2021 (78), July 2021 (70), August 2021 (79) and September 2021 (167).

A breakdown of the positive cases per month is as follows: March to July 2020 (413), August 2020 (893), September 2020 (1,588), October 2020 (1, 268), November 2020 (1,244), December 2020 (926), January 2021 (1, 309), February 2021 (944), March 2021 (1, 664), April 20201 (3,034), May 2021 (3,669), June 2021 (3,103), July 2021 (2,542), August 2021 (2951) and September (6,279).

Importantly, the Health Ministry is reminding the pubilc to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 Emergency Guideline.  Specifically, the order emphasise the need for correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving home; the importance of maintaining the six feet physical distance from others; and the need for good hand-hygiene.
