Police under close arrest for dragging  man by foot cuffs    

A Police Constable was placed under close arrest on Friday after he was caught dragging a man by a foot cuff who was in police custody into the lockups.

The cop has been positively identified as Constable 23107 Elliot, who is attached to the Whales Police Station on the West Coast Demerara (WCD).

According to a statement issued by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) this evening, cognisant of a video posted on social media the constable was seen physically assaulting a man who was in police custody, by throwing him off his feet and pulling at the foot cuffs which was placed on his feet, dragging him into the lockups.

The GPF further stated that the man was taken into police custody on Friday evening after he had driven a car into a canal at Whales on the West Bank Demerara (WBD). However, he was later released from police custody and sent away the same night after the incident had occurred.

“The GPF does not condone the excessive use of force or mistreatment of persons taken into custody by police ranks,” the GPF added.

An urgent investigation has been launched into the matter by the Police Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR), and the results will be made public.
