A 56-year-old pedestrian was yesterday killed after being struck down by a motor lorry on the De Kendren Public Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD).

Dead is Sherrane Hollingworth, of Fifth Street, Meten-Meer-Zorg, WCD, Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara).

According to a police report, the motor lorry, bearing registration number GZZ 4439, was being driven by a 60-year-old resident of Ruimzeight Gardens, WCD.

The lorry was proceeding west along the southern side of the De Kendren Public Road when it was alleged that Hollingsworth, who was standing on the northern side of the road walked across the road and into the path of the vehicle.

The report further stated that the front left side of the lorry had collided with the woman, causing her to fall to the road surface where she received injuries to her body.

Hollingworth was picked up by public-spirited citizens in an unconscious state and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

However, according to a video seen by this publication, the woman was almost to the other end of the road when the lorry had struck and dragged her body, before coming to a halt.

A notice of intended prosecution was served on the driver, whose breathalyzer test showed 0.000% BAC micrograms.

The driver was taken into police custody, as investigations continue.
