A forty-four-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly inflicting grievous bodily harm to a 27-year-old woman with whom he shares a child.
A Police report said that at about 16:20 hours on Sunday, the woman returned to Lethem from Georgetown with her brother. As she was waiting at the bus service to collect her suitcase and bags, the woman saw the suspect riding a bicycle in her direction.
She however hid from him since they have not been on speaking terms for the past four months. At about 17:30 hours on the said date, the woman was at her Kanuku Drive, Lethem home washing clothes when the suspect approached her and begged her to mend their relationship.
But when the woman refused to reconcile, he threatened to kill her. Fearful for her life, the woman attempted to run away, but the suspect grabbed her by the hair and dealt her several lashes on the arm with a piece of wood.
He then picked up a clay brick which he used to hit her several times on the head. The woman managed to escape, seeking refuge in a nearby variety store. The Police were summoned and the suspect was later contacted, told of the allegation, and cautioned. He denied hitting the woman.
The woman was taken to the Lethem Regional Hospital where she was treated for a broken left arm. The suspect was placed into custody pending investigations.
