Occupational Safety and Health officers Johana Vaughn, Marsha Jacobs, and Darwin Bourne, have commenced an investigation into the death of a tractor operator, Darshanan Persaud, 25, of 80 Supply, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
A visit was made to the accident site where Persaud was engaged in the ramping of land for rice cultivation at the rice field located at Helena #1, Backdam, Mahaica, ECD last Saturday. He had just finished working for the day and was returning to base when the tractor overturned and pinned him in the water where he was submerged for over 45 minutes.
The Labour Ministry has extended condolences to the relatives, colleagues and friends of Persaud. Meanwhile, Labour Minister Joseph Hamilton is once again reminding all employers and workers of the need for good workplace safety and health practices on the job so that everyone can return safely to their families at the end of the workday.
