𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟮𝟮, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟭 – Arakaka residents in the Matakai sub-region of Region One, are now among the latest beneficiaries of a hamper distribution program by the government for flood-affected citizens.
Hon. Collin Croal, Minister of Housing and Water, led the initiative along with Regional Chairman, Mr. Brentnol Ashely; and the Chairman of Matarkai Neighborhood Democratic Council (NDC), Mr. Orlando Thorne.
The Regional Chairman said that some thirty-two (32) communities across the region have been affected by floods, presenting serious implications for thousands of residents.
Minister Croal stated that this Arakaka, which was cut off from critical supplies due to inundated access roads, is the most affected area. As such he noted that the government’s aim is to assist all families that have been directly affected.
“We understand your plight and this is intended to help you. Our approach is threefold, initially, we conducted an assessment [and] we also have our health care workers monitoring for water bourne disease. This distribution represents the second aspect of our second response,” said Minister Croal.
The final aspect will include providing assistance to resuscitate farming, mining, and other economic activities that have been shaken.
Additionally, the Minister told Arakaka residents that development plans are in motion for the community. In the aim of expanding the village’s water distribution service, he stated that a new well will be added to the community.
“We also previously committed to providing a generator to supply electricity to the community for 2021, that generator has arrived and installation will commence soon. Every community’s development is important to us and the growth of our country,” the Minister said.
One hundred and fifty (150) hampers were handed over in Arakaka. As the day progresses, the Minister and team will be distributing hampers to a number of other villages in the sub-region.
